Red-Headed Woodpecker
The Red-headed Woodpecker is one of the 6 types of woodpeckers that are permanent residents of our habitat. Other species include Red-bellied, Hairy, Downy, Pileated and Northern Flicker. In winter, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers make sap wells in many of our trees. Brown-headed Nuthatches, a small, woodpecker-like bird are year-round residents.

This male Red-bellied Woodpecker drilled a nesting cavity in one of the many pine snags that were a result of Hurricane Katrina.
The female downy is on the left and the male (with the red spot) is on the right. Note the dark marks on the underside of the female's white tail feathers. This is a sure way to tell a Downy from a Hairy.
