Mission and Ministry...
What are we about?

On an ordinary day...

you will find her in a preschool, an elementary, secondary or university classroom, in a prison classroom, in a parish school of religion, or in someone's house conducting a scripture study, for you see, she is a teacher or pastoral minister. You may see her involved in health care, for she is a nurse, a dietitian, respiratory therapist, medical technologist. You may see her conducting retreats, giving spiritual direction, working with and for women, for she is walking the spiritual journey with others.

She is a Sister of Mount Carmel ...
She is, with St. Teresa of Avila, a "daughter of the Church."

A Sister of Mount Carmel's mission...
is fulfilled by the Carmelite presence she is to others in the specific work she does. In touch with the hunger in her own heart for the Living God, she has a special mission to be present to others in an ever deepening life in God, in new levels of Faith, Hope and Love, and in a spirituality which recalls Jesus in every day life.

Her life has a dual orientation to prayer and to service. Prayer is the source from which service flows; service is an overflow and stimulus to prayer.

She is heir to ...
an early history characterized by a community of devout women responding to the needs of the time and to the requests of the local church; of sisters who met the needs of Catholic education, the care of orphans after the Civil War, of the sick during the yellow fever epidemic.

She is one of about 100 Sisters of Mount Carmel, a pontifical institute of religious women, who pray and serve mainly in Louisiana and in the Philippine Islands. Her understanding of ministry today is that she be a Carmelite presence in a variety of ministeries, in accord with the needs of the local church and the resources of the congregation.

A Sister of Mt. Carmel strives...
to sharpen her own awareness as well as that of the people among whom she serves to have a high regard for and involvement in peace and justice issues.
