Carmelite Coat of Arms

About the Design
The Shield / Stars
The Crown
The Motto

carmelite shield The official symbol of the Congregation of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, or the Sisters of Mount Carmel, is a modern day version of an ancient symbol probably dating back to 1499.
This logo, which symbolizes the history and spirit of the Sisters of Mount Carmel, has been revised. A new clarity and sharpness enhance the ancient design. It identifies the Carmelite tradition brought to the sisters' varied ministries which include education, day care, health care and social services in the U.S. and Philippines. It symbolizes a centuries old tradition that was interpreted in many different ways over the years. Each rendition had a special meaning for the people of a particular era.

The Shield & Stars

Carmelite shieldThe colors of the shield are BROWN and WHITE. The dark mountain (bottom area) originally symbolized a " cloaked shield," light in the upper part and darker brown in the lower section. The "cloaked shield" represents the HABIT of the Ancient Order of Carmel: the brown tunic and white cloak.

Some writers explained that the shield of Carmel itself represents the defense of our Church and our Faith. The mountain inside the shield represents Mount Carmel where the first Carmelites lived.

At different times, different meanings have been attributed to the three stars. One explanation is that the three stars represent three periods in the history of the Carmelite Order.
    blue star-bullet Because Elias, the first hermit on Mount Carmel, is considered the founder of the Carmelite Order, the star inside the mountain refers to the earliest period, from Elias to the birth of Christ.
    blue star-bullet The second marks the period from Christ to the Crusades;
    blue star-bullet The third star represents the period highlighted by the Scapular vision. After the Scapular promise in 1251, the Carmelite order entered upon a period of prosperity that lasted for more than 300 years. The Order's purpose of spreading devotion to Mary was supplemented by a renewed interest in learning.
Similarly, Sisters of Mount Carmel can consider the star inside the mountain in relation to their own history:
    blue star-bullet the first star representing the foundation in France in 1824;
    blue star-bullet the second, the foundation in New Orleans in 1833;
    blue star-bullet the third, the Philippine foundation in 1962.

... and still another tradition gives the following meaning to the stars:
    blue star-bullet the star in the lower section, just below the mountain top is Mary, Queen of Carmel, mother of God
    blue star-bulletblue star-bullet the two stars in the upper section represent the patriarchs of the Order of Carmel, the prophets Elijah and Elisha.

The Coronet or Crown

In heraldry, accessories to the shield can include the helmet, the crest, the motto, and the supporters of the coronet (or crown). This crown was an adjunct to the shields of those whose dignity or office entitled them to be thus distinguished.

carmelite shield
The crown above the shield of our coat of arms symbolizes Mary, Queen of Carmel. It reminds all Carmelites that they are called to enkindle devotion to Mary in the hearts of her children.
