Brown-headed Nuthatches
The Brown-headed Nuthatch is an interesting little bird that inhabits the piney woods of most of the Southeastern United States. It excavates cavities in dead trees and will also nest in man made nestboxes. It eats pine nuts and sunflower seeds and also forages for insects, spiders and larvae. In winter they travel in small bands with Titmice, Chickadees and Pine Warblers.

An example of some of the acrobatic foraging that these small birds do. They have also been known to use tools (a piece of bark) to pry up tree bark to expose the insects or larvae beneath.

Brown-headed Nuthatches are regular visitors to the various sunflower seed feeders in our habitat.

Brown-headed Nuthatches are permanent residents here in South Louisiana.
