History
of the Town of Woodville, Alabama
Woodville is the oldest town in Jackson
County. Jackson County was created by an act of the legislature
meeting in Huntsville on December 13, 1819, making Jackson County one day
older than the State of Alabama itself. Henry Derrick settled
in Old Woodville around 1815.
Woodville was incorporated in 1890, with Dr. D.H. Little
as mayor. The incorporation was killed by an act of legislature in 1897,
but again in 1912 Woodville incorporated with James W. Woodall as mayor.
Since that time Woodville has had 17 different mayors. Today Woodville's local
government consists of a mayor and five council persons.
The residential area of Woodville is expanding and more
industry is being sought for the area. The proximity to Huntsville
and Scottsboro is a plus for
growth, not only in industry, but also in tourism. The 2000 Census lists
the population of Woodville at 761 residents.
