Welcome

Mardi Gras Future Dates

It's a "late" Mardi Gras this year, and that means locals will be prepared for the vagaries of a New Orleans winter. Of course, neither cold nor wet could ever dampen Carnival spirits around these parts. Mardi Gras 2009 won't be any different.

The actual date of Mardi Gras is determined partly by the Catholic church and partly by Mother Nature. In short, Fat Tuesday is 47 days before Easter, which is always the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox (March 21). The intervening period is called Lent, a time of sacrifice for Catholics. Carnival celebrants around the world mark the coming of Lent with weeks-long celebrations. And speaking of an early Mardi Gras, check out the 2008 date. Below is a twelve year schedule of Mardi Gras dates.
