Privacy and confidentiality are essential for psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. I keep what my patients say to me confidential; for example, I do not send any information to insurance companies without their explicit request and consent.
When I see patients who are legal minors, I discuss the limitations and importance of confidentiality with both them and their legal guardians (usually their parents).
Because “managed care” schemes almost invariably compromise the confidentiality and trust necessary for effective psychotherapeutic treatment, I do not belong to any managed care “panels.”
I do not accept “assignment” of payment from insurance companies. However, I am willing to complete the "provider" portion of standard HCFA 1500 claim forms (or other insurance forms that my patients provide). I do not submit these forms myself but instead give them back to my patients so that we can review them together. If they wish, they then can submit the forms to their insurance company.
