I could not get the numbers to work out correctly when I made the original pattern. This worked for me. Materials: US size 10 double-pointed needles Plymouth Galway Chunky, about 225 yards (any bulky weight wool should work) Gauge: About 3 1/2 stitches per inch. Gauge does not have to be precise Cast on 48 stitches and divide between 3 needles (16 stitches on each). Join, being careful not to twist stitches. I swap the last stitch on the third needle with the first stitch on the first needle. This makes a smoother join for me. K1 P1 rib for four rounds. Heel: Knit the first 24 stitches onto one needle. Divide the remaining stitches so that 12 are on each of the other two needles. Leave these needles alone while you work the heel. Working on the first needle with 24 stitches ONLY: Row 1: Sl 1, P23 Row 2: *Sl 1, K1* repeat to end of row. Repeat these two rows until a total of 12 rows have been worked. To turn the heel: Row 1: Sl 1, P12, P2 tog, P1. Turn. Row 2: Sl 1, K4, K2 tog, K1. Turn. Row 3: Sl 1, P to one stitch before the turn, P2 tog, P1. Turn. Row 4: Sl 1, K to one stitch before the turn, K2 tog, K1. Turn. Repeat rows 3 and 4 until there are no more stitches to be worked. There should be 14 stitches on the needle. Gusset: Pick up and knit 8 stitches (the slipped stitches). Knit the 24 stitches on the next needle. Pick up and knit 8 stitches (the slipped stitches). Knit 7 of the heel stitches. Move the other 7 stitches to the next needle. The beginning of the round is in the middle of the heel. Needle 1 should have 15 stitches Needle 2 should have 24 stitches Needle 3 should have 15 stitches Foot: Round 1: Needle 1: Knit to 3 stitches before the end of needle, K2tog, K1 Needle 2: Knit across Needle 3: K1, Sl 1, K1, PSSO, knit to end of round. Round 2: Knit around. Repeat these two rows until 48 stitches remain (12 on needle 1, 24 on needle 2, 12 on needle 3). Continue knitting around and around until the length measured from the heel is the same as the length of the foot you're knitting these for. Toe: Round 1: Needle 1: K to within 3 stitches of the end of needle, K2 tog, K1 Needle 2: K1, sl 1, K1, psso, K to within 3 stitches of the end of needle, K2 tog, K1 Needle 3: K1, sl 1, K1, psso, knit to end of round. Round 2: Knit around. Repeat these two rows until 20 stitches remain (5 each on needles 1 and 3, 10 on needle 2). Finishing: Knit across needle 1 with needle 3. You will have two needles with 10 stitches on each of them. Graft the stitches together with Kitchener stitch (stitch in, stitch off, stitch out is how I remember). Weave in any loose ends. Place footies in a zippered pillowcase or a mesh laundry bag. Put a little detergent in your washing machine with hot water. Toss in the footie bag and a towel or an old pair of jeans. Check on them every 5 minutes or so. When they are the size you want, rinse them in cool water, roll in a towel to remove the water, and let them dry. |
