What better way for North Florida runners to celebrate St. Patrick's Day than by participating in a race in a cemetery. Some of the folklore about the holiday includes the belief that Patrick raised people from the dead. He also is said to have given a sermon from a hilltop that drove all the snakes from Ireland. Of course, no snakes were ever native to Ireland, and some people think this is a metaphor for the conversion of the pagans. Some celebrants use the occasion as an excuse to increase their intake of beer; especially green beer. The venue of the cemetery is also very peaceful since there is no vehicular traffic and the permanent residents don't cause any trouble. |

Before the start of the race, Race Director, Doug Alred, gave instructions concerning the race course to the runners. Since the run had a common start for the 5K and 10K runners, this became a little complicated. Most runners gave up on trying to understand after the instruction about where the 10K and 5K runners split off after the first part of the second loop for the 10K runners. After the cannon sounded, most runners were content to follow the runners ahead and hope they didn't get lost. |

Apparently, one of the runners became confused and got lost during the run. He was seen hurdling over some tombstones in his attempt to get back on course. Norm Wyner didn't enter the race but he accompanied his wife Frieda to the event. He got a chill up his spine when he came upon the marker (seen to the right) while watching Frieda and the other more lively participants. |
