Lesson 3
Building your first page

To open a new page click on the page icon on the toolbar just below File on the menu bar.  To open a previously saved page click on the folder icon on the toolbar.

Front Page Express
Look for the view modes (Design, Split, Code, Preview)
Design: Most of what you enter will be done here.
Code (HTML): This is Hyper Text Machine Language which the computer understands but only advanced programmers should modify.  To learn HTML get the book "HTML 4 Dummies" from Amazon.com
Split: Is just that (Split between Design and Code)
Preview: Shows what the page should look like online. More about this in later lesson.
Buttons in lower left corner - click to change view. On the menu bar
  View
     HTML
To return to design click

To preview you first save the page then go to the folder where it was saved then open it or select a browser then open the file from there.
You will probably have several pages which need to be linked.
To create a simple menu just type the words that you want separated by "|" which is shift of "\" above Enter.
Example:| Home | Page 1 | Page 2 |
Then highlight the word (Click and drag the cursor)
Example:| Home | Page 1 | Page 2 |  Then go to Insert on menu bar, sequence to right, some differences in pop up window.

 Hyperlink
  Choose a tab

When linking to pages within your site only the filename.html is needed.
Links to other sites require full URL Example:
http://theirsite.filename.html

Example Menu:  click on the word

Home | Lesson 1 | Lesson 2 | Lesson 3 | Also add a background image like this title_back.jpg in a cell dedicated only to a menu as below.
Right click, Select

Another way to link is with graphics.  They should be in the same folder as the page for easier access both in your computer and on your site.  To add the graphic go to insert on the menu bar then follow sequence to right.
Caution:  Do not copy graphics from my pages.  There are certain copyright limitations that apply to my pages and all other graphic sources.  Read my note at the bottom of this page.
