Club meeting (Oct. 22, 2009) Jeff Orrock from the National Weather Service (NOAA) from Raleigh was at the College and gave us an over view of the effects that we may have with Winter Weather this year.  Jeff was to the point and as usually gave us an excellent presentation.  Jeff also covered the NOAA weather (Internet) maps and weather warnings that
are available by just clicking on the subject line on the internet.

We will say an O.K. turn out 21 folks Stanly County had Brian Simpson (Emergency Manage),  John Yow (EMS Manager), Don Little (County Ranger) and Jeremy Callicut (Asst. County Ranger).

Stanly County ARC had 11 members and 4 guest another ham attended, I didn’t get his name I think that he was from Randolph County.

October 24th QRP party at the Oakboro Park went well.  The table was scheduled for noon by another group.  We felt that we be out without interrupting the invited by 11 am.  All went well Antenna set up went well.  The day that was select for our event was also a DX contest day.  We had lots of heavy signals received but we could make a single contact too many pile up on the frequencies that we heard.  A good turn out, a little rain mid morning, weather wise a date that one of us must of ordered.  Our Talking Myna bird did say much other then “Where’s William and Where’s John" over and over again?? Does anyone want to by a used Myna Bird?

Ladies & Gentlemen, I would like to THANK all persons who participated in this two day drill. It was amazing as I was at the Eastern Branch for awhile yesterday to hear all the stations checking in, and listening to the net while mobile going to work. It really showed what we can do when all work together to accomplish one goal, which is to provide our citizens of NC backup, and sometimes primary communications to emergency management. Special thanks to those who attended many hours of meetings with emergency management officials who were planning this drill. Also to those who helped in getting the very valuable Winlink System setup at the State EOC, and the Western Branch, and soon to be at the Eastern Branch, which really came thru.

I hope in the near future to discuss the final results of the drill, with N4TAB, and others  to see if we need to do anything different, and will provide all with a final report.
Like our THEN web page indicates that a special Thanks goes to those net controls, who spent lots of time taking checkins, with times during the day that band conditions were not that good.

I am sure that all Emergency Management officials are very pleased with our performance, and hope all will continue to train, and learn ways to improve our system, with learning which antennas work best, and which portable systems that work best, whether it is VHF/UHF, or HF.

Please keep up the good work that all are doing. Thanks

Dear Ham Radio Community.
Western Carolina Amateur Radio Society needs your assistance.
The Mt Mitchell Repeaters will be off the air if we do not act.  This is a BIG BIG deal.
Below is an email sent out to this evening.  We are asking that you forward this email to
your members and ask that they respond to help us keep the
53.63, 145.190, 224.54, 442.225, 443.600 repeaters on the air.

You may follow this on QRZ -  http://forums.qrz.com/showthread.php?t=206595

Greetings All

I think everyone would agree that Field Day 2009 was a great success.
We had a great turnout in a beautiful location. I believe we presented a
favorable impression of Amateur Radio to the community.

There were willing operators for almost the entire 24 hour period. We had
some propagation issues and some minor technical problems but nothing
that would keep us off the air.

As field day coordinator I would like to thank everyone for your cooperation
and I want to extend a special thanks to Steve and Ginger for the cookout. I
do not remember having an organized meal at Field Day. I think the meal
added a focal point to the event. I know I have never seen that many people
at field day since I have been attending.

I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

K4OGB North Carolina QSO Party
March 1, 2009

The 14 folks that attended

John – K3ON              Bill  K4VET                 Lane  KS4PG
Terry – KA4KTU        Bill  KC4TDC             Paul – KD4OZI
Jack – KE4WJY          Jeff – KJ4GZE and wife, Jennifer
Ginger  KJ4JWU          Ed – W4KMA             Robin – WA4NLF
Steve  WB4TSN          Charlie (Gibson) Seaford (The Kitchen Manager)

What a excellent NC QSO party.  The turn out was lighter then expected looks like a few expected, (expectee’s) missed because of the bad weather, lots of rain, lots of rain.  The food, Stew provided by Lane, using Ed’s (W4KMA) special patented recipe was excellent.   The cheese was very good but I missed the wine.  Lots of contact made and all that attended had a great time.  We used Ed’s, almost new Radio and it was a hit and we were hoping it was a door prize but we were wrong.  Ed listed it as a no trade, no sale item.  The radio had lots of bells and whistles.  Normally they would be lots of knob turning but the new radio appears to use more button pushing, a real neat radio and the folks enjoyed Ed bringing it for our use.  Charles our kitchen Manager must have worked as a CEO for a major Air Lines as the food was hot and on time.  Hat’s off to Lane for putting this together and for the food, drinks and the excellent facilities for us to meet, a good location in Stanly County.

Chopper Up, Bill (KC4TDC) brought his Helicopter that he talks about (a lot) and launched the helicopter in the middle of the floor (now referred to as Pad 11), good results and good demonstration of Bill’s flying ability.  Bill appeared to be a little nervous.  At the end of his flight Bill was out of breather, the group taught Bill the breath in, breath out method for a longer life.

It was really nice meeting the folks that we have not met or seen in a while.  Jeff, (KJ4GZE) just got his General ticket and Ginger (KJ4JWU) is our newest ham in Stanly County.  It always good to meet old friends and new ones.  On the Wednesday ARES/Club net lots of good comments on the QSO party and they would like to see the Club do this event on yearly bases, something to defiantly think about.  Before I close special thanks to the baking ladies, Cookies that Robin’s (WA4NLF)  mother Ruby made, Blue Berry muffins Don’s (AE4AH) wife Jean provided and special thanks to maker and baker of the pound cake and other assorted items provided by Judy, Lanes (KS4PG) wife.  I think that most of us were on the road before the snow started.

A note from Lane on our score… Results mailed.

We made 99, 2 point contacts and we had 50 multipliers for a total of 9900. We worked both W4NC and W4WS that gave us 150 bonus points. The total submitted score was
 10,050 points

JULY NC SECTION NEWS

JUNE EARTHQUAKE DRILL A BIG SUCCESS

An NC Emergency Management graded NCEM/FEMA exercise was held on June 23 and
24. The exercise assumed all landline and cellular telephone systems were
interrupted and communications between involved EOC's and Red Cross offices
occurred via Amateur Radio. By all accounts, the exercise was a great
success and state and local emergency management agencies were impressed with
our capability. More than 80 stations checked-in to the Tarheel Emergency
Net during the exercise and both simplex and repeater-based VHF was used
between counties participating in the drill. Army MARS Winlink stations
provided HF-based email between the Buncombe County EOC, Western Branch EOC
in Conover and the State EOC in Raleigh. When emergency management's own
email system experienced some very real technical difficulties, MARS Winlink
was ready as a backup. Congratulations and thanks to everyone who
participated in this drill!

FIELD DAY REPORT

Thanks to all of you for your Field Day hospitality! I visited 12 of the 52
sites in the NC section, driving 511 miles. Here are some random
observations: The Rowan ARS had the local volunteer fire department on hand
and several members are also hams. I was happy to meet the new Rowan County
EC, Gary, K4GHL. The Tri County ARC in High Point was holding their first
Field Day and setup at the High Point Red Cross office, with several new hams
participating. I enjoyed visiting with Weldon, W4AJT who was operating from
an air conditioned tent at the Greensboro ARC site. Weldon has been a ham
since 1930!. The Alamance ARC had access to the county's fire training site.
It helps when the county emergency manager is a ham and is participating in
field day! The Orange County ARC and the Durham FM Association held a
combined field day with some impressive antennas and lots of good food. The
CDXA group was operating from W4DXA's QTH and probably won their category.
In Concord, the Cabarrus ARC used their club emergency trailer and also had
access to a massive crank up tower owned by the county. The Union County
club was setup in the beautiful town of Waxhaw and had a visit from a county
commissioner. Charlotte's TV14 was on-hand during my visit to the
Mecklenburg ARS site and the club got some great press coverage. The
Charlotte ARC activated their first class club station at the Salvation Army
office. But the most impressive venue was the Smith Chart ARS operation in
Raleigh. Since their Field Day was combined with a State Highway Patrol
drill, the Smith Chart group had access to the NCSHP tower trailers and
command post vehicle. Wow!

WINLINK OPERATIONAL AT BRANCH EOC'S

Thanks to the leadership of Central Branch AEC Tom Brown, N4TAB, the state EOC
and Eastern and Western branch offices are now equipped with HF Winlink.
There is also a portable unit for the state's command trailer. This is the
culmination of 7 years of work with state emergency management to secure
funding, obtain the equipment and complete installations at all three
locations. The Winlink system received its most visible test during the
Western NC earthquake drill. While there is still some tweaking needed, the
new equipment provides excellent backup email capability for the EOC's.

MEDIA HITS

Congratulations to all of you who helped out with Field Day publicity in the
North Carolina section! As mentioned above, the Mecklenburg ARS site had a
visit from Charlotte cable's TV14 news channel. The Shelby Club effort was
covered in the Shelby Star. Two TV news stories were aired in Wilmington,
one on ABC affiliate WWAY-TV and another on WECT. The Cape Fear ARS efforts
were covered in "Ham Radio Operators Not Yielding to Future" on
fayobserver.com and dailyadvance.com described the Albemarle ARS Field Day
operation. The New Bern ARC got coverage in the New Bern Sun Journal.
Blueridgenow.com included not only a great article on the Blue Ridge ARC
field day, but they also posted some video. The Tar River club made it into
RockyMountTelegram.com. Jacksonville's jdnews.com posted a notice about the
Carteret County ARS Field Day. Greenville's WNCT covered the Brightleaf ARC
Field Day and the Ashe County Field Day was described on mountaintimes.com.

NET MANAGER FOR CN STILL NEEDED!

We're in serious need of some help with both the early and late sessions of
the Carolina's Net. Check-ins, liaison stations, and net control operators
are needed, but our most acute need is for someone to serve as net manager.
Don't let your CW speed be a barrier. Sending stations will always slow to
whatever speed you can copy and I'll bet after a few weeks on the net your CW
speed will increase considerably! The CN nets cover both North and South
Carolina, so your friends from across the border are also needed. CN-Early
meets on 3573 kHz at 7:00pm and CN-Late meets on the same frequency at
10:00pm.

SKYWARN™ is a concept developed in the early 1970s that was intended to promote a cooperative effort between the National Weather Service and communities. The emphasis of the effort is often focused on the storm spotter, an individual who takes a position near their community and reports wind gusts, hail size, rainfall, and cloud formations that could signal a developing tornado. Another part of SKYWARN™ is the receipt and effective distribution of National Weather Service information.
The organization of spotters and the distribution of warning information may lies with the National Weather Service or  with an emergency management agency within the community. This agency could be a police or fire department, or often is an emergency management/service group (what people might still think of as civil defense groups). This varies across the country however, with local national weather service offices taking the lead in some locations, while emergency management takes the lead in other areas.

10-year-old boy killed by lightning

Published: 6/11/09, 10:05 AM EDT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indianapolis police say a 10-year-old boy was killed by lightning at a campground while he and his father walked to their car to seek shelter from a thunderstorm.

Jeremiah Miller was pronounced dead early Thursday at a hospital after paramedics tried to revive him.

Police say the boy and his 26-year-old father, Jeremy Miller, were camping at Mike's Southport Fishing Lakes on the city's south side. The boy was struck by lighting about 3:30 a.m. during a thunderstorm that also swamped the area with more than 2 inches of rain.

On June 23 & 24 we need to have the net operational starting at 0700, and maybe going up to midday for the earthquake drill. There is usually some rag chew QSO's going on 3923 stating around 0800, if they are already on the frequency, whoever is the first net control could politely ask them to move so we could use the frequency. They have done that in the past for some of our SET's. If the 75 mtr band starts dropping out then we could go to our alternate 0f 7232 plus or minus a few kc's. Before we would change freq's there should be several announcements on 3923 that we are moving, and the VHF/UHF repeaters. I would also like to see our net activation times put on the web page.

Ron ,I do feel like we need to have the Eastern Branch Active during that time period, as a backup, and to test our own equipment. My work schedule is changing, so I may be available both days in the morning. I will know later this week for sure.

Thanks to all

Bernard Nobles WA4MOK

Dear NC PIOs:
Great news!  Thanks to our Section Manager Tim Slay, N4IB, the section will reimburse any currently appointed ARRL PIO in the North Carolina section who completes the PR101 course before December 1, 2009.  The course can be ordered by going to: http://www.arrl.org/catalog/?item=0133   The cost is $19.95 for the course itself, and about $6.-$7 to ship it to your QTH.  Once you complete the course, and Tim and I are notified that your certificate of completion has been issued, you can complete the attached form for reimbursement.  Please scan and email it to Tim at n4ib@arrl.org or send via US mail to Tim’s QTH at 141 Queens Cove Rd, Mooresville, NC 28117-9609 for his signature, and he will submit it on your behalf to ARRL HQ.  It may take several weeks for your reimbursement check to arrive.

The PR101 training course represents a major leap in the training of ARRL field PIOs.  As I shared with you earlier, almost 75% of all ARRL PIOs have had little or no training in PR, media or journalism.  As you go through this first version of PR101, you will notice that sections of it appear primitive, amateurish or elementary.  Those of us who are on ARRL’s Public Relations Committee cobbled the course together after it was approved by ARRL management but hadn’t been funded.  Rather than wait for funding the next fiscal year, we all felt it was best to begin now, and make version 2.0 in 2010 look smoother and more polished.  Nevertheless, the information in the inaugural edition is on-target relative to amateur radio PR, and you will find it beneficial.

Tim and I aren’t sure if the section budget will permit any PIO who takes PR101 after December 1, 2009 will be reimbursed.  We are leaning, however, to make PR101 training a requirement for all NC section PIOs who want to retain their ARRL PIO appointments starting in 2011.  Therefore, I encourage you to sign up now for PR101 if you want to be reimbursed for the cost of the training, and to ensure that you will have the training completed by the time it may become mandatory.  I expect that many section managers will be making PR101 compulsory for their section PIOs in the near future.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.  Congratulations again to Randy Ross, KI4ZJI, for completing PR101 along with me.  It doesn’t take long, and it will elevate your outlook, approach, professionalism and dealings with the media as they relate to amateur radio.

TNX es 73,

Bill N2COP

KB4C AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHT - Tommy Queen, K4BNP, Area 14 DEC

We are seeking nominations for the 2009 KB4C Award. The award is named in honor of Miriam Smith, KB4C, who became a silent key in July 1995. Miriam was well known in western North Carolina for her strong commitment to emergency and public service communications. She held an extra class license, received the A-1 Operators Award and was ARES Emergency Coordinator/RACES Radio officer for Buncombe County in the 1970's. Miriam was responsible for the earliest draft of the Buncombe County Emergency Response Plan. She was someone willing to do whatever was asked to help our community. The award will be selected from nominations submitted from anyone in Areas 14 and 15 (the western North Carolina counties, old area F). The selection will be named by a panel appointed by the area 14 DEC. The criteria for this recognition include active, licensed radio amateurs within area 14 or 15 who have demonstrated a long term commitment to emergency and public service communications through ARES/RACES. The recipient does not have to belong to any specific group. They must simply demonstrate an active commitment to the job we are asked to do. The award will be presented at the WCARS Hamfest on July 25th, 2009. Please submit your nominations for this award in writing to k4bnp@aol.com. Nominations must be received no later than July 1, 2009.

The Albemarle 444.900 (444.900  +   Tone 110.9) repeater went on the air around lunch time today and is on the link system now. Initial testing shows good portable coverage along most of Hwy 24/27 between Mint Hill and Albemarle and along Hwy 73 in Cabarrus and Stanly counties. Portable coverage is excellent throughout the city limits of Albemarle. Mobile coverage looks good south to Wadesboro and west into Mecklenburg County as well. We've also had a few portable check-in's from the Richfield area as well.

Thanks to Jeff (KJ4GZE) for making us aware of this on the Friday Tech net.

Thanks to 12 club members and their 13 quests for a great social last Thursday. Hope everyone enjoyed the meal and time as much and I did. I thought the room was much better than before when we ate in the open area.
Paul will be moving the van to his QTH in May for a clean-up fix-up session. Be ready to help on this club project.
The May meeting will be in Locust on May 28th. Check out the club web site for more info.
Lane reminded us of the upcoming Field Day and will need your support for this event.
No one has signed up for Net Control for the Tech Net during May so if you're around Fridays at 9 PM volunteer to call the net.

Thanks to Don, AE4AH, for coordinating with Blue Bay for the room.
