DECEMBER NORTH CAROLINA SECTION NEWS

TRAFFIC HANDLING TRAINING NET STARTS FEB 3

In early 2007 an ARRL committee released a report on Amateur Radio's response
to Hurricane Katrina. One of the issues raised by this "National Emergency
Response Planning Committee" was that too few of us are skilled at traffic
handling. The aftermath of a disaster is not the time to learn how to send
NTS traffic! The North Carolina section and local nets provide daily
opportunities for you to practice your traffic handling skills. Another
opportunity begins soon. Mark Rappaport, W2EAG will lead a traffic handling
training course, the "Carolinas Training Net", which will begin Sunday, Feb 3
at 5pm local time on 3.861MHz. The net will continue every Sunday thereafter
until the course is completed. The course will be a good refresher for
experienced operators and offer those new to traffic handling a thorough
introduction. A training manual for the course has been posted at
www.ncarrl.org and certificates will be issued to those who complete the
course. Thanks to W2EAG for his hard work on this program.

AG4MB & KI4RVH going to the Island!

There will be a Special Event Station at Ocean Isle,
NC starting next Monday, March 3 through Friday,
March 7. This event is in honor of George Pocock who did
many experiments with kites including a 113 mile trip
on a carriage pulled by kites. The crew will be using
kite flown antennas wind permitting. We will be set
up to use all HF but will most likely be on 20 M
during the day and 80 M at night. Tentative
frequencies will be posted on the QRZ lookup site for
W4U in the next few days. Hope to work a bunch of you
during the event. Any questions please feel free to
e-mail me. Please feel free to send this to anyone
who might be interested in trying to work us.

NORTH CAROLINA QSO PARTY

The 2008 NC QSO party will start at noon local time on Sunday, February 24 and
run until 10pm. Sponsored by the Forsyth Amateur Radio Club, W4NC, the event
is one of the most exciting state QSO parties and can be especially fun if
you're new to contesting. The power limit is 100W, so you don't need a big
amp to compete. The object of the contest is for out of state stations to
work as many NC stations in as many NC counties as you possible. Stations
within NC try to work as many NC counties, other states, Canadian provinces
and DXCC countries. We need as many counties as possible on the air to give
folks contest multipliers! Why not make this a special club event? How
about working the contest mobile to get more counties on the air? For more
information check out www.w4nc.org.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 13, 2007

“National Amateur Radio Awareness”

North Carolina’s 18,000 ham radio operators have a lot to celebrate during this Saturday’s “National Amateur Radio Awareness” Day.  Because of the vital emergency communications services ham radio operators provide following disasters, North Carolina passed a law that enables hams to erect antennas in residential neighborhoods.  And the national “Young Amateur Radio Operator Of The Year” Award for 2007 went to 17-year old Grant Morine of Wilmington.

The recognition of “National Amateur Radio Awareness Day” comes in the middle of September, which the Dept. of Homeland Security has declared as “National Preparedness Month”.  Ham radio has been around for over a century, but many citizens recognize amateur radio for the communications it has provided after disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes and blackouts.  Called the “Amateur Radio Service” by the Federal Communications Commission, operators are known by their nickname as “Hams”, a moniker from the telegraph era.  The term “Amateur” means operators are strictly volunteers and receive no compensation for their services.  Unlike other two-way communications services, each ham radio operator must pass a written test to earn a license.

For over one hundred years, Tar Heel ham radio operators have been relaying messages during and after disasters.  With the proliferation of television and satellite antennas in the 1970s, many municipalities enacted ordinances that banned all antennas, including ham radio antennas.  Then, when citizens needed communications after disasters, hams were unable to respond.  The new law, which takes affect October 1st, will permit reasonable accommodation of antennas in residential areas.

Throughout North Carolina, hams get on-the-air to share fellowship, test their equipment for long range capabilities, and to conduct simulated emergency exercises.  A large drill is scheduled statewide October 6th

About ten percent of all ham radio operators are under age 18.  Grant Morine won his award based on his project to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, which was designing and building thirty emergency indoor back-up antennas for hospitals and Red Cross chapters along the coast.
