Julia
McCrory
Weatherford lives with her family in an old farm cabin, built by her
grandfather, just outside Black Mountain, NC. The
cabin studio looks out over the valley and town, and up to the mountain
skyline, supplying daily inspiration for her work: an apple orchard, a
rocky creek, an endless forest.
Julia's textile work freely crosses boundaries, combining realistic and
stylized images, traditional and innovative techniques. Her work
captures the rhythmic pattern, rich color and whimsy of nature. Cotton
and silk fabric is hand dyed, batiked and printed, then cut and sewn
together into natural scenes. She works in both two
dimensional and sculptural forms.
Julia is a graduate of Berea College, where she majored in studio art
and worked in the weaving and needlecraft student industries. Julia is
a member of the Southern
Highlands Crafts Guild
and has work available
at the Folk Arts Center in Asheville, and at the bi-annual Craft Fair
of the Southern Highlands. Her work has been shown at Blue
Spiral 1, The Black Mountain Arts Center, The Upstairs Gallery, in
Berea, Ky, The Convention Center, in Asheville, The Asheville
Quilt Guild's Annual Quilt Exhibition, and the NC Quilt Guild
Exhibition. Work is also currently availble at The Warren
Wilson
Store at the Grove Arcade, in Asheville, and The Seven Sisters Gallery
in Black Mountain.
