We're Dotty and Jack Gantt. Dotty was, before marriage - Dorothy Hastings, daughter of the late
Joe Hastings of Dimmitt, Texas. We met and married while we were at Midland Army Airbase during WWll.
After the war we moved to Pickens, South Carolina. Before retirement, I worked for the Singer Company as an Industrial
Engineer and Dotty worked as a Legal Secretary and for our church. We have two children and three grandchildren, and all live
nearby.
We have had a great life together and have had so many things that we like to do
together, especially photography. We have thousands of slides and pictures as well as movies
Wildflower photography has been of special interest to us and we have trudged many miles just to get a picture of one more specie
of wild flowers. Over the years we have had many photographs and articles we wrote published in our
local newspaper and in the Greenville News. We served as local reporters for The Greenville News for many years.
During my spare time I served as Scoutmaster for 37 years and had 64 scouts to become Eagles. I loved hiking and camping and
scouting gave me an excuse to do what I wanted to do anyway.
Computers have always
been another interest to both of us, and we bought our first computer in 1978. Computers have been of special interest to me
because I have written two over 500 page books on my computer. Both have been published.
I have also written a 500+ page novel which is being edited at the present time. I doubt that it is good enough to be published,
but I enjoyed writing it anyway. I also have had several articles published in national magazines, so you can see writing and computers
are of great interest to me.
As I mentioned, Dotty served as a Legal Secretary and
our Church Secretary on a part time basis for 37 years. She is a wonderful housewife and mother and of couse, the greatest grandmother.
One of the things she did all on her own was sewing. For years she made most of her own clothes and our daughter's clothes.
Our daughter was voted the best-dressed girl in her senior class in high school, and Dotty made nearly all of her clothes.
One of our daughter's friends, who was from a rich family, would spend the night with Jo and go through her closet and ask something
like this - "What exclusive dress shop did you get these dresses from? I can't find anything so pretty."
Unfortunately a number of years ago, after knee surgery, a blood clot caused her to have a stroke. Thanks to months of therapy,
she is okay now, except she never regained her speech. We make out okay though, and the main thing is, we still
have each other and will soon be married 63 wonderful years. She's still a beautiful woman, don't you think!
