Capturing the Spirit With Portraiture workshop

July 2007

July 25 and 26, 2009: Beyond Green: Using Color in the Urban Landscape. Artspace, Raleigh, NC. Saturday 10-4; Sunday 1-4. $185 ($165 members/teachers).  Register early, as classes can fill quickly. Call 919-821-2787, or use the registration form from their website to sign up by mail. Email info@artspacenc.org for more information.

How do you handle all that green in a landscape? What about all the gray and brown inevitable within an urban setting? How did the landscape evolve from subdued naturalism to the daring color choices of the Fauves? What approaches can artists take today to keep their landscapes original and fresh with vibrant color? In this workshop, participants will be given keys to making editorial decisions about color choices in the landscape. A lecture component and discussion of the effects of various color schemes will begin the workshop, followed by color mixing and matching exercises geared toward landscape. After a brief demonstration by the instructor, weather permitting, participants will hone their skills with a hands-on plein-air project. Working from photographs versus plein-air will also be discussed.

• August 7-9, 2009: Exploring Color: Using Color Schemes in the Landscape. Art Purveyors, Foscoe NC. 10-4 each day; $250. Fee includes a three color sample selection of M. Graham Oils or Acrylics plus an Art Advantage gallery-wrapped canvas. Sponsored by M. Graham & Company. Class is limited to 8 participants.

This in-depth three day exploration is for artists who want to get a handle on the use of color in their work with a focus on the landscape. Artists are welcome to use any color media in which they feel well versed.

A lecture and slide show begin the workshop that will explore the color wheel, color schemes, color use throughout art history, and the emotional, psychological, physiological, and symbolic reactions to color choices. Hands-on projects will first consist of color mixing exercises. By isolating color as an artistic element, its effects will then be explored by repeating the same simple composition in three different color schemes. The keys learned from this exercise about the effects of editorial color combinations will then be applied to a more formal plein-air landscape composition, weather permitting. Handling all that green, keeping landscapes original and fresh with vibrant color, and working from photographs versus plein-air will be discussed. Techniques for color mixing and application will also be demonstrated by the instructor.

"I was given the inspiration and freedom to abstract the colors of the landscape in order to express my emotional response to it. Amy’s individual attention and advice was invaluable to me as I painted."
