Workshops
Unless otherwise stated, oils and pastels are suggested, but any media in which a participant feels well-versed is welcome, including watercolor, colored pencil, and acrylics.  A materials list will be made available prior to each workshop.

Alla Prima: Wet-in-Wet Painting

Learn to keep colors clean and intense when painting with the wet-in-wet technique instead of getting muddy!  A slide lecture and instructor demonstration begin the workshop, followed by a hands-on painting project with instructor feedback.

Beyond Green: Using Color in the Landscape

How do you handle all that green? How did the landscape evolve from subdued naturalism to the daring color choices of the Fauves? What approaches can artists take today to keep their landscapes original and fresh with vibrant color? In this workshop, participants will be given keys to making editorial decisions about color choices in the landscape. A slide lecture component and discussion of the effects of various color schemes will begin the workshop, followed by color mixing and matching exercises geared toward landscape. After a demonstration by the instructor, weather permitting, participants will hone their skills with a hands-on plein-air project. Working from photographs versus plein-air will also be discussed.

"I was given the inspiration and freedom to abstract the colors of the landscape in order to express my emotional response to it. Amy's individual attention and advice was invaluable to me as I painted."

~ Jennifer Edwards, participant, Beyond Green.

Capturing the Spirit with Portraiture

This portrait and figurative workshop is designed to meet the needs of all skill levels, with a concentration on the face alone for beginners to full figure studies for the more experienced artist. A live model will be used. Introductory lecture will include the elements and principles of art, composition, color theories, and going beyond a likeness to evoke a mood with expressionism and symbolism. Traditional and experimental approaches will be discussed. Pastels and oils are suggested, but any media is acceptable. Instructor will locate and transport model.

Exploring Color

This workshop is for artists who want to get a handle on the use of color in their work. A lecture and slide show begin the workshop that will explore the color wheel, color schemes, color use throughout art history, and the emotional, psychological, physiological, and symbolic reactions to color choices. A project in the medium of the participant's choice will first consist of color mixing exercises. The effects of color will then be explored by isolating it as an artistic element by repeating the same composition in several different color schemes.

Exploring the Dark Side: the Value of Values

So often, artists working in any media are afraid of getting their dark values dark enough. The reality is that dark values pop the light ones and give form to shape, resulting in a more dramatic composition with improved spatial depth. A hands-on project will begin with a tonal work in charcoal, then the results will be applied to the media of the participant's choice. Slide examples from art history will also be shared. Come explore your dark side!

Exploring Personal Symbolism

Participants' personal symbologies as well as world symbols will be explored in this workshop. Artists and non-artists alike can benefit from this exploration of the personal inner landscape. Beginning with a slide lecture and brainstorming session, a meditation will follow in order to explore participants' personal symbols. A hands-on mandala style project will be the result of the experience.

Glazing with Oils

You can achieve greater color complexity and visual depth while creating photorealistic illusions with glazing! The workshop will begin with a slide lecture and a discussion of pigment and medium choices, followed by a demonstration of  application techniques. Participants will then begin a still life of reflective surfaces in acrylic. These initial layers will quickly dry to then receive the oil glaze layers, when the real magic begins.

The Key to Drawing: Accessing the Right Brain

(This workshop can also be tailored as a creativity seminar for businesses.)

Anyone can learn to draw - take the mystery out of it by accessing the drawing skills merely dormant in the right side of your brain. Exercises build on one another to then be used to execute a still-life drawing. For people who always wanted to draw but didn't think they could, or for artists who would like to brush up on the basics. These exercises are also good for accessing creativity.

Psychology of the Self: the Art of the Self-Portrait

Explore the art of the self-portrait in this workshop. Why do artists feel compelled to depict themselves in their work? The psychology of depicting the self will be examined, and a slide lecture component featuring artists well known for their bodies of self-portrait work, such as Van Gogh and Rembrandt, will be included. Find out first hand that there is more to the issue than the availability and affordability of a model when you do the hands-on project in your choice of media. The difference between using mirrors and photographs will be explored.

"A two-day workshop with Amy is like four years in art school!"

~ participant, Psychology of the Self, Yorklyn, DE.

Visual Complexity Through Pastel

A wide range of expressions can be achieved by employing a few basic techniques while exploring different surfaces and types of pastels available. Producing complex colors through layering, the importance of color schemes and the use of complementary colors will be stressed. A variety of surfaces will be discussed.

Business of Art Seminars

Full Day Seminar: The Business of Art

Are you ready to turn your hobby into a business? Have you been selling your art, but phrases such as a Section 179 deduction, a tax number, and the “Creative Property Exclusion to the Uniform Capitalization Rule” sound like a foreign language? Unsure about how to price your work or find the right gallery? Art is a business, and the more artists themselves treat it as such, the more the general public can also be educated about the value of artwork.

Topics covered will include:

  • Getting started as a business

  • Taxes for artists: federal business deductions, state tax numbers, and inventories

  • Contracts with clients and galleries

  • How to approach a curator: what a curator looks for, the submission packet, preparing a cdrom or slides, and questions to ask a potential new gallery

  • Pricing and Presentation: how to price your work and professionally present it through choices of matting and framing

  • Diversifying your income and innovative marketing: several ways to make a living as an artist

  • After a lecture component, time permitting, participants are welcome to bring submission packets for an informal critique. Participants will receive a lot of handouts with this seminar.

"I have waited 20 years to hear what you had to say.... What you covered in your class should be mandatory for every art student."

~ Melissa Smith, participant, Business of Art and How to Present Your Work combined day seminar

Half Day Seminar: The Business of Art -- How to Get Started and Keep it Going

Ready to turn your hobby into a business? Have you been selling your art, but phrases such as a Section 179 deduction, a tax number, and the "Creative Property Exclusion to the Uniform Capitalization Rule" sound like a foreign language? Art is a business, and the more artists themselves treat it as such, the more the general public can also be educated about the value of artwork. Topics such as getting started as a business, income taxes, tax numbers, innovative marketing, and pricing your work will be covered. Participants will receive a lot of handouts.

Half Day Seminar: How To Professionally Present Your Work To a Curator...On a Shoestring Budget

Participants will be guided in how to find a gallery and approach a curator. What a curator looks for, the overall presentation of a submission packet, rules for preparing slides and cd roms, questions to ask a potential new gallery, and how to best present the work through choices of matting and framing will be discussed. Time permitting, after a lecture component, participants are welcome to bring artworks and support materials for an informal critique. Participants will receive several handouts with this seminar.

The two half day topics above are best paired to make the full day seminar on the Business of Art.
