While at the National Archives searching for information about my ancestor, Simpson M. Hagood, I came across
the attached petition by citizens of Milton County written in 1863. I have tried to transcribe it accurately, but
many of the words were overwritten by black ink seeping through from the signatures on the back page, or some
of the signatures were illegible. I have put questionmarks wherever I couldn't figure it out.

Milton County ) Secretary of War

We the undersigned respectfully petition your Excellency to allow the detail of James
V. Roddy, a private in Capt. Wm Paris' Company (C) 42nd Reg Ga Vols as a Blacksmith to work in
Some one of the Government Shops in Atlanta. Said Private Roddy has been a long time in
the Service and has been unable to Stand Camp life. Consequently has been confined to Serve
Hospitals nearly all the time. he can do the Country more Service as a mechanic thus
employed than in any other way. ??? your Excellency thinks favorable of this our petition.
