Kennedy at the controls of PT 109 in the Solomons in 1943.  If  he appears proud of himself here, his statement made in 1963 may give us a clue why: Any man who may be asked what he did to make his life worthwhile can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction, "I served in the United States Navy."
