Newly discovered Guadalcanal photos as the 5th Marines takeover from the 1st Marines on the front lines of battle

Above photo shows 5th Marines arriving to relieve the long suffering 1st Marines. The 1st Marines now heading to Brisbane, Australia for a little rest and relaxation. This is how these pictures made it to here.

These unauthorized pictures were taken by Anthony Bamba and developed when he reached Brisbane, Australia in 1944. Had these photos been discovered then, he undoubtedly would have been in big trouble with the Marine Corps. At this late date in 2009, how much trouble could he be in? Or me either?

Note (above) written by a 1st Marine in 1944 identifying the barge shown at the here. This barge was sitting abandoned by the Japanese troops

This is a Marine rest area on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. Note all the nice facilities.

This shows some of the luxuries provided -- like a chair to sit on.

This guy wanted his picture taken (maybe) but had to show a little action.

This is a field-kitchen. Do not waste time looking for any steaks or ham. Possibly a can of dehydrated potatoes could be spotted.

This is a Marine Field Hospital. Hardly plush but at least no lines to wait in.

This is a picture of the action on the front lines. It doesn't look too hazardous but don't try to stand up here.

Marines above are actually getting some chow. It appears that the Marines were among the first to introduce 'finger food.'

Another 'chow' call. It would seem that a good imagination would be of help at dinner but, at least, no fast food here.

Some thought was given before posting the above picture but that is what these marines had to face.

The above notation explains the picture well.

A desolate looking beach shown. Not too many swimmers when shells are exploding.

More self explained pictures above and below.

Above: unloading supplies on the beach

This is where the Americans buried Japanese soldiers killed in battle.

"Somebody's bed - don't know who" was the info on the picture above.

It will take a little work to get this Japanese tank running again.

Troops possibly being arrested, as suggested by the photographer.

Jap transport - evidently a bad landing.

The clothing that Japanese snipers wore while sitting at tree top waiting for customers.

At the time this picture was taken, a young Marine was lying under this cross. Eventually all bodies were removed at returned to the USA for burial.
