These two B-17s were probably the first to fly over Guadalcanal (note second plane's wing tip at lower right). Undoubtedly, thanks for this picture go to the ever-present LIFE photographers who managed to wangle their way aboard. Smoke and haze from the ongoing land battle can be spotted at the upper center of the picture.
