A few TV related tidbits were updated, reflecting upcoming changes to stations regarding the pending UPN/WB merger. Some stations will be airing the new, combined CW network. Other stations will pick up Fox's upcoming My Network TV; some stations will just become independent when they lose their WB or UPN affiliation. I had mistakenly noted WTTO (Birmingham) and WBIH (Selma-Montgomery) as picking up the CW network. This was an error on my part. WTTO has in no way announced affiliation with the CW as of yet. My information was incorrect, and I apologize. WBIH is being rumored to pick up CW. I have heard this from a few sources, and will leave it online that they may be picking up that network. Until I hear something concrete from WTTO, I have restated that it is only rumored that this station may switch affiliation.

Please note that the TV & FM statewide listings have been modified. The TV pages have been split, with analog channels (including LPTV) and digital channels now on seperate pages. The FM pages have also been split, with "full power" channels on one page and all the LPFM and translator stations on another page. This should help load times on slower connections.

This is mentioned on the info pages for WRTR and WENN, but I thought it noteworthy to post here that I heard WENN testing early this morning on 105.5. Both 105.9 and 105.5 were carrying Hallelujah FM's gospel music. I was unable to determine for SURE, but it sounded as if the 105.9 signal was coming from the Tuscaloosa site. If it was, the signal was quite good in the western section of metro Birmingham, where I received both signals. The 105.5 signal was also a major improvement in this part of town.

Added/updated profiles for several of the Mobile area FM stations to reflect the fact that there's been a mass shut-off of RDS signals in that market. Currently, only "95 KSJ" offers the signal, down from at least four stations before (WAVH, COOL 107, TK 101 and The Ticket). Southeastern Public Radio, which operates three noncommercial stations in lower Alabama have also shut off at least one of their RDS signals as well, on the Troy station that serves Montgomery. This all follows an RDS shuffle that has been ongoing in the Birmingham market, where classical WBHM had RDS for a while, then after it went off "Magic 96" came on, only to go off a short time later. Luckily "Buzzard", "Z-100", "The Q" and "Hallalujah FM" are all keeping RDS alive for the thousands of aftermarket radios that decode the name, format and time set features.
While iBiquity's IBOC digital scheme appears dead in the water due to poor quality AM service, it seems like a good time for all stations to start offering more "gee whiz" to listeners, like RDS on FM and stereo on AM. Both those options are cost effective and provide most if not all the "new" features "HD radio" would supposedly offer, with current, deployed technology.

Made a few changes to reflect the fact that Irondale left the Jeffco trunked system for their old 460 MHz frequencies. Supposedly they're using encryption so no listening-in will be possible. In other news, Birmingham is officially going to move off SouthernLinc and onto their own trunked system, which hopefully will be analog so scanner hounds can start tuning in again.

Made a few format changes to some North Alabama AMs - most notably the addition to a mysterious TIS station at 1520 kHz for the Wheeler Wildlife Refuge, which is audible on I-65 just south of the Tennessee River bridge. Also, WFMH in Cullman has moved to a classical music format, which is very rare on AM.

A small addition to the main FM page - WLXY-FM Northport has a construction permit to move to the WTUG tower in lower Tuscaloosa County, and to increase power to 100 kW. Oh, and they're moving to 100.5 MHz. This is allegedly to enter the Birmingham market. WTUG's signal is not good in B'ham; I don't know how WLXY will make it.

I also updated the callsign links to reflect the correct URL to the FCC's callsign lookup program. Callsign lookups are now working again. Some media news: WVSU, Samford University's tiny FM station, is going through some big changes! According to the Birmingham News, Samford has launched an all-jazz format. The station
also has a construction permit for 500 watts of power from a new tower near Vestavia Baptist Church.
They will employ a directional antenna to keep from interfering with WJSR, which is also on 91.1 MHz. The station's new direction is the doings of one Berkley Frasier, who once owed WYDE (back when it was a country formatted AM station.)
In other news, many of the profiles have been altered. If a station has a directional antenna and a profile, the antenna pattern will be shown on the data page. The transmitter location will now also pop up correctly on those pages, too! Rather than linking to the original image of the antenna patterns at another site, I have them copied locally. I tried to get in touch with the site owner but had no luck. I will keep trying, and if they want me to take them down they will disappear without warning.

In other news, Alex Bowab reports that WGCX (CP) in Brewton was testing on the air with southern gospel during the first week in September. They should be on the air soon! Also WQEM, an AMFM station in Columbiana, should be on the air by late fall. A format for the station still has yet to be decided.

Lots of changes to report:
First, to help with printing, I've changed all the backgrounds of the station listings, except for the Mobile section, which will take quite a while to finish. Backgrounds are white and letters are bold and black. This should help keep the pages from drainging your printer's ink quite so much!
Second, the profiles have finally been moved from the ke4oyn directory to the almediapage directory. The links to each induvidual info or history file had to be altered. I also changed them from absolute (http://members.aol.com/almediapage/profiles/wwww.html) to a shorter format (profiles/wwww.html). That one single move chopped off nearly 30 kb over the entire set of pages!
Third, I created some new neon-y banners for each AM, FM and TV section to go with the new white backgrounds.

I am leaving the AM, FM and TV profile pages in the /ke4oyn/profiles directory for the time being. There are over 282 profile pages (!) and at least that many links that will need changing. I am considering various options to better organize the profiles so I can update them easier. I will also be attempting to get some sort of graphic representation (locally, on my site, not offsite) of directional antenna patterns.

Thanks to some really interesting DX this morning, I was able to determine that WVFG in Uniontown and WYVC in Camden both broadcast in mono. In addition to that chage to the state FM list, the WQUA history was updated to include the original call sign for the station.

I have decided to try to minimize the graphics of the site, so I have gotten rid of the JavaScript multi-color Table of Contents buttons. The LinkExchange Banner from each page has been removed. I have not yet decided if I want to continue to use the banners on ABMP or Scan B'ham, but I will no longer use it for sure on the mail CENS page.

Updated the Birmingham section! Finally, short histories are up for all the Birmingham FM, AM and TV stations. Special thanks to J Alex Bowab for coming up with the vast majority of that information. He's also providing the complete history to all the Mobile area stations! The format for the listings has also been changed to a more clean look. This should reduce the cluttered nature of the previous lists. This same style is being implemented in the Columbus, GA and Mobile sections as well. They should be up in the next few weeks. I apologize for the amount of time it's taking, but it's quite the undertaking to get all this together!

Every single page has been updated! Each page now has a new title banner; I got rid of the graphics. Added to each page is a navigational banner, too. The state of Alabama page has been updated to reflect the latest news on the State's plans to upgrade their police radio system. Added a link on the state page to a site that contains more information on the state's trunked radio system. The navigational banner has been added to the White Paper file, and includes links to every MHz of listing. Finally, I updated the welcome page to include a link to a scanner hobbyist site with information on HR 514, which threatens to practically eliminate the scanning hobby through more regulation.

Finally fixed the left hand menu. Internet Explorer users were not seeing the entire menu because IE is a lazy browser that doesn't interpret things quite like Netscape does. Added a "home" button so you can return to CENS.

After dilligently remodeling the look and feel of the content of the various pages within CENS, I finally decided to update the look of the main page and subsequent "Table of Contents" pages. While the content contained on the pages gets broader and larger, the images are now all smaller and more compact to help keep the page loading with a decent time. The page should now be completely compatible with any browser that supports frames. Navigation should be easier thanks to a creative new "Table of Contents" that keeps all web pages within a few clicks reach. Please remember to look here first if you suspect your favorite area has been changed! I track all major and most minor changes on this "What's New?" page. Finally, use the "Feedback..." page if you discover something that doesn't work. You don't even need a mail server to send me a message.
