Safety is paramount with dogs - here's what we've learned so far....

Car travel

DO NOT ALLOW YOUR DOG IN THE CAR WITHOUT A SEATBELT OR A CRATE.

Let me tell you a story. Last year, I was in my car with 3 crated cats and 2 uncrated dogs. Brigadune was in the front, Bart in the back. I was 2 blocks from my house, going 20 miles per hour, when Bart jumped over my shoulder. I glanced at him, and in those 2 seconds, I hit a drain on the side of the road. Never will I forget the sight of Brigadune flying through the air and hitting the windshield. Only by the grace of God did she survive unharmed. My car, a Honda civic, was totaled. Keep in mind, I was only going 20MPH. So, when you think to yourself – "Well, I’m just going down the road…" remember:

MY CAR WAS TOTALLED 2 BLOCKS FROM MY HOUSE AT 20MPH.

Do you want a memory like mine, or worse?

Here are two types of seatbelts (only use harness-type seatbelts). Or you can go to dog supply store. Get one, or crate your dog. PLEASE.

Ruff Rider (the best)

Foster and Smith (we have this one – works great! Corgis take a medium)

Boating

Taking your pup out to cruise? Invest in a good life preserver – if the boat capsizes, you won’t worry so much. Plus, have you ever noticed that corgis are front-heavy? The best we've found are a vest, with floatation on the sides and back - not at the chest.  With those short legs, chest floatation causes our pup to flip over - not a very good live saver :)

Collars

A safety collar? Yep. Thought I was being paranoid, buying this thing, but lo and behold…. The owners developed this after one of their dogs choked to death when the other got its lower jaw caught in the collar. This can end up with one dead dog, and the other with a broken jaw. I got them for Dune and Bart, and they’ve worn them for 2 years. And just recently, the same thing happened to them while they were playing. Dune got her lower jaw hooked in Bart’s collar, and Bart promptly did a flip. And, just like it was supposed to, the collar broke open. Whew! I think they are pretty inexpensive for such peace of mind.
