My wife and I have a small farm(22 acres) in the rolling hills of N Alabama where we raise American Blackbelly Sheep. We first got the sheep in 1997 to replace the goats we had that just weren't working out. The goats were constantly getting out, wouldn't eat everything we wanted them to, and had a strong odor. They also had to be wormed every couple of months which is a real pain. Then we read about these "Blackbelly " sheep and decided to give them a try. Best decision we ever made. With these "hair" sheep (no shearing) we use the "survival of the fittest" technique when it comes to worming (i.e., no worming) and it is working great. These sheep have turned our virtual "jungle" into a "state park"....THEY EAT EVERYTHING! We give them hay in the winter with a small serving of corn a few times a week and that's about it for the winter. We provide them a "free choice" mineral supplement year round. Very low maintenance!
