Habitat for Humanity Project:
Our joint efforts with Al Huda Islamic Center and Milledge Avenue Baptist Church
to build the Abraham House are continuing. Mark your calendar for our final
fundraiser. A Mediterranean Style Dinner will be held on Monday, January 19
(Martin Luther King, Jr. Day) at 6:00 in the Milledge Avenue Baptist Church
Fellowship Hall. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $10 for children under 12. The
committee is seeking volunteers to help in preparing and serving the dinner, to
volunteer contact the Temple office (549-4192).
Toys, Toys, Toys – Thanks to
everyone who donated a new toy at the annual Hanukkah Dinner. The toys were
wrapped and donated to Our Daily Bread. This kitchen serves lunch daily
to Athens’ residents in need, and holds a Christmas dinner with clothing and
gifts for families living in poverty.
Project Safe: We recently
delivered numerous items that people have donated over the past few months.
Thanks to everyone who placed an item in the box in the temple foyer. Please
participate in our continuing efforts to support this shelter for women and
children fleeing violence in their homes. Items needed include: towels, zip lock
bags, diapers, toiletries, tissues, coffee filters, paper towels, liquid hand
soap.
Homeless Shelter Dinner: CCI
continues to serve dinner at the homeless shelter the second Sunday of each
month. Contact the Temple office (549-4192) to sign up for a month to provide
dinner at the homeless shelter.

The Social Action Committee is the community service coordination
point for Congregation Children of Israel. The Social Action Committee's
purpose is to find meaningful community based projects for members of the
Temple. This may include direct participation in a project or by providing any
opportunity for members to donate to a specified cause. The Social Action
Committee also seeks to help other Temple organizations or groups in advertising
or coordinating their community action projects.
The Social Action Committee of Temple also has a variety of "standing"
projects that the Social Action Committee oversees. These include:
Project Isaiah—annual food drive during the High Holidays. The
collected food is given to the Athens Area Food Bank
Channukah Toy Drive—annual collection of toys during the Channukah
season. Toys are either given to Toys for Tots via the Athens Navy Supply School
or dispersed through Catholic Family Services.
American Cancer Society Relay for Life—members of the Temple raise
funds and then walk in the ACS Relay held every year in May.
In between our standing projects, the Social Action Committee coordinates
other smaller efforts or helps to advertise the projects of other groups in the
Temple. Examples of these projects include:
Collecting used computers and computer peripherals to be used by
individuals with disabilities in the state of Georgia.
Collecting supplies for the Athens-Clarke Humane Society—a project
initiated by our Pre-school and Kindergarten classes
Collecting blankets, coats, and clothing for Catholic Family Services
Raising funds to support our 6th grade class in donating Teddy
Bears to the local Fire Departments for EMS and Firemen to give to children
in need or turmoil
Anybody interested in helping or wanting to start a project, contact the
Temple office at (706) 549-4192.
