11/12/2007: The
Catholic Church of Saint Monica has been supporting a Gift of Water (GOW)
program for the past three years. This program provides clean drinking water
to approximately 400 homes in the vicinity of Sacred Heart Church in
Hinche, Haiti.
We now plan to augment the GOW program with a Safe Water Program as
promulgated by the Centers for Disease Control
www.cdc.gov/safewater.
This new program will be simple, robust and, most of all, sustainable. We
began this program last month with a pilot project servicing approximately 30
homes and we plan to expand this effort by placing an additional 400
purifiers at the beginning of this coming year. It is our goal to place
2,000 purifiers (serving approximately 10,000 people ) throughout the city of
Hinche by the end of '08.
Obviously, to accomplish these goals, much work needs to be done. Tasks
include:
1. Testing water in customer households before and after treatment
(including gathering data)
2. Training and surveying purifier users (gathering more data)
3. Shipping, fabricating and distributing purifiers
4. Organizing and interpreting data and compiling reports
5. Help with marketing (advertising, branding, research)
6. Making presentations about our program to interested groups or
individuals (begging)
7. Help with writing grant applications
8. Legal and administrative help
